About

Rachel Kozlowski is an artist from Buffalo, New York. Born July, 29, 1989, she is currently residing in Newark, Delaware and has concentrated on painting while pursuing her love for photography. Rachel completed her BFA Degree in Fine Arts with Distinction and a minor in Art History at the University of Delaware. While at the University of Delaware, she has travelled to Germany and Austria (2010) along with the East African country of Tanzania (2011) through Study Abroad Programs concentrating in Art. Artist Statement:My recent work has begun to explore the idea of art as an experience. I am fascinated with the subjectivity of art and how the artist as well as the viewer has the ability to translate and interpret the meaning of artwork. My series of mixed media paintings are the combination of Optical Art, materiality, and visual perception. Optical Art is primarily concerned with the interaction between visual illusion and the idea of space. I have used the surface of the canvas as a plane to explore ideas in both visual perception along with the distortion that takes place in the reproduction of work. I utilize abstract line, form, and color to transform the visual space and dimension of the canvas. My work acknowledges art in the age of mechanical reproductions and how replications can remove the material quality of an object. The work is constructed on multiple layers of material with the intention of photographing in a manner contradictory to the framework of the painting’s support. Together, these elements combine to create a sensory experience that utilizes the design elements of geometric abstraction. Contact for Resume.

TANZANIA EXPOSED

As Curator of Tanzania Exposed, my focus for the show was to highlight both student work along with indigenous artowrk from Tanzania. This show was developed after at Winter 2011 Study Abroad program to Tanzania. As one of the students in the program, we we immersed in the rich culture of the Iraqw, Hadzabe, and Maasai people. Each tribe welcomed us into their homes, where we learned about art, society, and life.Tanzania Exposed highlighted beadwork, fabric kongas, head dressed, arrows, and spears. In their society, everything has a purpose, even their art. Woven basket and everyday tools were both beautiful as well as functional. The student contribution came from projects focusing on documentary photography. In addition, the photograhs on display were available in a silent auction, were all proceeds went to the Dorobo Fund, an organization dedicated to the preservation of indigenious tribes in Tanzania.For more information about the Dorobo Fund, visit them at their website: http://www.dorobofund.org/

DISTORTION of VISUAL REALITY Senior Thesis

After participating in the Undergraduate Research Program during my Sophomore and Junior year at the University of Delaware, I began to develop my own way of thinking and creating art. With two years of developing my thoughts and ideas, I proceeded to work on my Senior Thesis, acting as my cummulative research project of all that I learned at U of D. My Thesis committee consisted of Professor Robert Straight and Professor Troy Richards as my Thesis Directors, Professor Abigail Donovan as my Second Reader, and Associate Professor Chad Nelson as my Third Reader.
